ARTIS has developed a sustainable park bench made from elephant dung in collaboration with five students from the AMS Institute. Last week, the first prototype was placed in ARTIS Park with a view of the enclosure of the Asian elephants.
The bench consists of 65% elephant dung and 35% recycled plastic. If the prototype remains of good quality in practice, the ambition is to eventually replace all park benches in ARTIS with this sustainable model.
AMS Institute students experimented with elephant dung. They dried the manure on improvised pallet constructions, in a specially purchased second-hand microwave and then pressed the manure in a heat press.
