Perhaps you have once met or attended a great music concert: the Music Dome in the Oosterpark.
There wasn’t much to see of the dome in recent months. Last year the roof turned out to be unsafe, causing the dome to disappear behind construction fences. The roof is now being tackled.
Renovation
The municipality will start the renovation on April 22, 2024. First, the old roof will be carefully removed. A new wooden construction will then be placed. The roof is then finished at the top with a sloping roof whose covering consists of zinc plates. Such a type of roof fits in with the time period in which the Music Dome was built. The work will be completed before the summer and the dome can be used again.
More than 100 years
It is not surprising that the roof needs to be replaced: the Music Dome has been in the Oosterpark for more than 100 years. The park itself was laid out in 1891 according to a design by landscape architect Leonard Springer. And although Springer already included the dome in his design, construction took some time. It was not until November 1908 that an order was given to make “an iron bandstand”. The design then came from the Public Works Department.
Municipal monument
In the years that followed, the Music Dome was the stage for various small events. Not only did many music concerts take place there, but the dome was also a well-known meeting place. After decades of loyal service, the municipality decided on July 3, 2012 to grant the Music Dome the status of ‘municipal monument’.
