Pick up a tree for your garden or balcony for free

On Saturday, November 2, the Gezonde Stad, together with partners such as Amsterdam Weerproof, will hand out no fewer than 7,500 trees to Amsterdam residents.

A record number, which refers to the city’s 750th anniversary. Do you want a free tree? Then register quickly. Last year, De Gezonde Stad handed out 3,200 trees. The extra large number this year is a treat from the organization to the city celebrating its birthday.

Annual promotion
With the annual campaign ‘Trees for Amsterdam’, sustainability organization De Gezonde Stad calls on Amsterdam residents to make the city greener by planting a tree in the garden or on the balcony. Councilor Melanie van der Horst and director of De Gezonde Stad Hannah Hendrikx will open the campaign festively at 11 a.m. at Stadsboerderij Osdorp.

Request and collect a tree
This year the promotion is extra special: the trees will be distributed at 4 different locations so that all Amsterdam residents can easily participate. The distribution locations are: Stadsboerderij Osdorp in Amsterdam Nieuw-West, De Ceuvel in Amsterdam Noord, De Groene Hub in Amsterdam Zuidoost and KIT Tropentuin in Amsterdam Oost.

You must first request the tree via De Gezonde Stad. The trees are a maximum of 1 meter and can therefore easily be taken on bicycles or in public transport.

Gold for nature
There are 2 native tree species to choose from this year: the wild cardinal’s grosbeak and the field maple. Native trees and shrubs are worth their weight in gold and fit in well with Amsterdam’s nature. They are small species that are suitable for city gardens and balconies and contribute to biodiversity in the city with their blossoms and berries.
