The municipality has granted Hortus Amsterdam a permit for the planned renovation of the Three Climate Greenhouse in 2024.

The iconic greenhouse of the Hortus Amsterdam on the Nieuwe Herengracht is being completely sustainably renovated into a greenhouse for the future. The environmental permit that was required for this was granted by the municipality this summer. The greenhouse will close in 2024, the Hortus will remain open The Three Climate Greenhouse dates from 1993 and is in urgent need of renovation. An urgency that the Hortus seizes on to sustainably renew the greenhouse – completely in line with its own mission.

It will be the first gas-free public greenhouse in the Netherlands. And also the only place where the importance of plant biodiversity and its relationship with climate is explained. Now that biodiversity is under so much pressure, this task of the Hortus is becoming increasingly important. “If we want visitors to act differently with our mission, namely with care for nature, then we must of course also show that this is possible,” says director Carlien Blok. The greenhouse will have insulating roofs, double glazing, storage for reuse of (rain)water and smart, energy-efficient climate systems. Architectural firm ZJA was the designer of the greenhouse in 1993 and is now also the architect for the renewed, sustainable adjustments.

Not only the outside of the greenhouse will be renovated, major adjustments will also be made to the furnishings and plant collection. In addition to a new tropical greenhouse section, a desert section and a Cape space, there will also be additional exhibition space to explain the story of biodiversity and its relationship with climate on a global scale. The design and furnishing of these spaces was created by Boom Landscape and the Designwolf agency.

Once the environmental permit has been received, the Hortus can enter the final phase; the actual renovation. The current greenhouse will close for renovation at the end of February 2024 and will reopen in 2025: the year in which Amsterdam celebrates its 750th anniversary.
