The executive board of the East district Amsterdam has adopted the final design for the area surrounding the National Slavery History Monument in the Oosterpark.
This means that the design has now been approved and implementation can start. The municipality will start preparations after the summer. The municipality will then first draw up contracts with the contractor and suppliers. The contractor can then start work at the beginning of 2025. If everything goes according to plan, everything will be ready before July 1, 2025. And so for the National Commemoration of the Past of Slavery and Keti Koti.

Cause
There were several reasons why the municipality wanted to change the location around the National Slavery History Monument. The intention is to make it a beautiful and dignified place where everyone can commemorate, stay, learn and celebrate. More and more people are interested in the Dutch history of slavery. As a result, more people visit the monument.
Especially during the National Commemoration on July 1, there is not enough space for all visitors. The municipality wants to receive all visitors in a dignified manner. The East District is working together with the National Institute for the Dutch Slavery History and Legacy (NiNsee) to implement this plan. Together they want to improve the space around the monument. The municipal council supports their initiative and has reserved money for their plan. Thus it is better suited for its important function.
