Doctors Without Borders looks back to 2023

How would you summarize 2023? General director Vickie Hawkins experienced it as a year in which one crisis followed another.

A year in which people worldwide were confronted with brutal violence, destruction and extreme insecurity. In areas that were in the news, but also in places we hardly heard about.

With support from donors
Our teams provided assistance in those places. Help that they could only provide with the support of donors. With their contribution, our doctors, nurses and logistics staff were able to take action for people who were severely affected. Through devastating earthquakes (Afghanistan, Syria/Turkey), through war (Ukraine, Gaza), through escalating conflicts (Haiti, Sudan) and diseases that claimed many lives.

We have achieved this
In the annual report of Doctors Without Borders you can read what has been achieved in the past year. In 2023, we spent €338.6 million – 84 percent of total costs – directly on medical care for people in need. From Doctors Without Borders Netherlands we have provided assistance in more than thirty countries and areas around the world.

Medical results

  • 3,630,988 medical consultations performed
  • 64,828,938 liters of clean water provided
  • 96,574 deliveries assisted
  • 116,103 children admitted and treated for malnutrition
  • 473,258 people vaccinated for measles

We go on
Where people are affected by violence, disease, natural or climate disasters, we provide medical care. With the support of our donors we can continue to do this. Thank you very much for everyone’s involvement.
