Athenaeum leaves De Plantage

Published on Monday, March 8News

Bookshop Athenaeum has permanently left the building at Roetersstraat 41, since March 1. We would like to thank Ruth Josephus Jitta, store manager since 2018, for the great cooperation and Athenaeum for being a member of our neighborhood network.

Athenaeum regularly provided book tips for our neighborhood newsletter. Our neighborhood network was welcomed as guest in the bookstore in 2019 during the literary Kafee. Together with local residents we enjoyed the program and the hospitality of the employees.

Living room
Athenaeum Roeterseiland has functioned since 2015 as a lively living room and book palace for the Plantagebuurt, right in the academic center of Amsterdam. The shop offered a selection of literature, children’s books, magazines and non-fiction, and was also a place for young and old to meet at lectures, book presentations and the bi-monthly literary program KAFEE.

Corona crisis
Sales in the Athenaeum stores declined as a result of the corona crisis and reorganization was inevitable, resulting in a reduction from 46 to 34 jobs. In addition, the sale of study books turned out to be unprofitable for Athenaeum. Also the shop in Roetersstraat was too large for the neighborhood function. The other five Athenaeum branches will continue to exist and of course everything can also be ordered online.
