In the middle of this eventful year, our fellow Plantation member Doctors Without Borders looks back on what the medical teams have achieved in the 2020 annual report. With the support of donors, lives have been saved by providing medical care to those who need it most. Below are their results in brief. You can read the Annual Report here.
What have we achieved together?
In 2020, we provided medical assistance in more than 30 countries and territories around the world. In addition, € 243.4 million was spent on emergency medical aid (84.8% of the total expenditure).
Some of the results:
- Medical consultations: 2,629,534
- Liters of clean water supplied: 186,650,549
- Major surgical procedures: 13,722
- Deliveries supervised: 79,846
- Patients treated for malnutrition: 49,974
Providing aid during the pandemic
Naturally, the corona pandemic kept us in its grip. Despite the mainly logistical obstacles we faced, our teams managed to continue the medical assistance in our projects while adapting to COVID-19 at the same time.
In action during emergencies
Our teams responded to several acute emergencies: a large-scale measles epidemic in DR Congo and severe flooding in South Sudan. In Tigray, Ethiopia, tens of thousands of people fled en masse from fierce fighting. We have taken care of the often severely traumatized people and provided medical assistance.
