For the performance A collision with the past, ‘De Vlammende Eend’ adapted the book The Man Who Didn’t Hate Jews by Chaja Polak.
During the performance, events from the Second World War are examined: to what extent can you understand what happened and what choices people made? And when does ‘trying to understand’ turn into ‘justifying’?
Based on Chaja Polak’s personal story, we look at perpetrators and victims. Their stories are inextricably linked. These stories are also part of our collective memory. But what do we actually know and what not?
After the performance there will be a discussion, during which, in addition to the makers, Chaja Polak will also be present.
Depending on the audience, these conversations address themes such as: ‘exclusion, then and now’, ‘personal responsibility and citizenship’, ‘freedom of choice’, ‘nuanced education about the Second World War’ and ‘media ethics’.
