Turbulent history of the 1940-1945 Foundation in the Resistance Museum

00:00:00event

Since this week, the exhibition Care for the Resistance: the turbulent history of the Foundation 1940-1945 can be seen in the Resistance Museum Amsterdam.

This foundation was founded eighty years ago, on October 13, 1944, in great secrecy, at the time under the name ‘Stichting 1940-1944’. The purpose of the Foundation was to provide assistance after the war to resistance members in need and to the families of killed resistance members. The Foundation still exists and has undergone many eventful developments over the years. The exhibition offers a vivid picture of this history.

The Foundation – with many volunteers from the resistance – has provided financial and, above all, social support since 1945: families are guided by social workers, there is help in looking for work, there are study grants, children’s holidays, contact days and more. In the 1970s, the Foundation also became involved with other victim groups: Jews, civilian victims, people from the former Dutch East Indies, and young people with second generation trauma.
Then difficult times arose for the Foundation. The exhibition highlights many aspects of the Foundation’s work and this turbulent history.

Caring for the resistance: the turbulent history of the Foundation 1940-1945, until March 30, 2025, Resistance Museum, Plantage Kerklaan 61.
