00:00:00event

The new exhibition ‘The Illusionist. Samuel van Hoogstraten’ will be on display in the Rembrandthuis Museum from February 1.

Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627-1678) is a name to remember. He learned and worked with Rembrandt, in the student studio of the Rembrandt House. Of all Rembrandt’s students, he was the most successful. In his own time then. Because after the 17th century he lost his fame among the general public. And yet he was a learned artist who constantly experimented with different subjects and optical tricks.

He was even a pioneer in the field of illusionism: the 3D artist of his time. He also wrote a famous book late in life full of lessons for a new generation of painters – his intellectual masterpiece. High time for a renewed introduction.

The exhibition about Samuel van Hoogstraten is part of a diptych, in collaboration with the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. In the Rembrandthuis Museum, the place where he studied to become an artist, the focus is on Van Hoogstraten himself. A selection of his masterpieces from the Musée du Louvre, The Art Institute Chicago and the Kunsthistorisches Museum, among others, travels from Vienna to the solo exhibition at the Rembrandt House Museum.

In this exhibition you will get to know Samuel van Hoogstraten, discover the art of illusion and get to work yourself: see through the tricks and create your own optical illusion.
