Portuguese Synagogue is Heritage Special

event

Come to the Portuguese Synagogue in the Jewish Cultural Quarter on June 12! Free access.

During your holiday it is quite normal to visit an impressive cathedral or synagogue. Yet in the Netherlands we pass by unnoticed. While Dutch churches and synagogues house the most beautiful artefacts, made by the best artists and incorporated in masterly decors. Together they now form the organisation ‘Largest museum in the Netherlands’. On 11 and 12 June, the Largest Museum of the Netherlands is organizing a special Open Monument Day. During this weekend we celebrate the start of the summer season with special, free activities throughout the country, including in the Portuguese Synagogue in De Plantage. An excellent opportunity to take a look! Sixteen churches and two synagogues form the basis of this special project.

The Portuguese Synagogue
On Sunday 12 June you can search for hidden treasures in the Portuguese Synagogue. For a long time this was the largest synagogue in the world. Be surprised by the light and the shiny copper chandeliers. With the free audio tour you will not miss a single detail. Between 12:00 and 16:00 someone is available to answer all your questions; about the building, about the Jewish community or about the restoration. Admission to the Portuguese Synagogue is free on this day. Will you come and discover the hidden treasures around the corner? For the full programme, visit grootstemuseum.nl.
