During Open Monuments Day on September 11 and 12, thousands of monuments throughout the Netherlands open their doors to the public for free. In this way, this special Dutch cultural heritage is made accessible to a broad public. Hopefully that will contribute to its preservation. More than one million visitors visit monuments every year on this day.
The theme this year is ‘inclusion’; Under the slogan ‘My monument is your monument’, specific monuments have been opened up and space is offered for ‘other’ or underexposed perspectives, associated with a monument or place. Think of buildings with a religious, social or political character or places that have played a role in our colonial history. Extra attention is also paid to physical inclusion, including wheelchair accessibility to monuments.
There are no monuments to visit in De Plantage, but in neighboring areas such as just across the Amstel, in Oost/Watergraafsmeer, Noord and Science Park you can.
