Lecture: Christ icons

Drs. Carel van den Berg gives a lecture on Christ Icons in the Luther Museum.

The Christ icons are perhaps among the most revered of the Eastern Orthodox churches. In this lecture the following topics will be discussed: first, we look at the icons that tell important phases in the life of Christ. Then combinations are discussed that strengthen the worship of the Christ figure and are so important for personal devotion. Finally, we consider an icon that is misread when our western knowledge is unfamiliar with the icon’s original intention.

Drs. Carel van den Berg studied human geography at the University of Utrecht, after which he was a geography teacher from 1969 to 2007. He is one of the compilers of the book ‘Geslagen imagination, Lutherse penningen in Nederland’ (Verloren Publishers, Hilversum, 2010).
