Hidden talents in the nursing home

In April Outsider Art Galerie will focus on unknown creativity in the nursing home. Every person is a carrier of talents. The human mind, even when affected by dementia, turns out to be resourceful.

Illustrator and care worker Eva Gans shows a large number of drawings that were made under her supervision by people with dementia in Amsterdam nursing homes. The drawing lessons are meetings where the participants like to go and in which they show a visual development. The drawings, in A4 format, are for sale for € 45 each. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Alzheimer Nederland foundation. On Thursday, April 29, the Outsider Art Galerie organizes an art talk via live stream with the initiators of the exhibition. Register via

Dementees X Spoken Word
There are also video performances by Spoken Word artists Sanguilla Vabrie, Reinier van der Veer, Claartje Chajes, Rik Wolf Overtoom, Gershwin Bonevacia and Mariëm Zian. They are inspired by the literal language of people with dementia. Their voices are barely heard and their language not always recognized, while their utterances can be precious, life-wise and often funny. That is why care organization Cordaan pays attention to ‘Dementees’, a language that invites connection. In 2020, a start was made with Dementees X Spoken Word with the aim of bringing the public into contact in an artistic way with the special perception of people with dementia.

Outsider Art Galerie in the Hermitage Amsterdam is a collaboration between healthcare institution Cordaan, Museum de Hermitage Amsterdam and Museum of the Mind and aims to provide the art of outsiders with a full-fledged stage.

Exhibition “Every person is an artist”, April 1 – May 2, 2021; can be visited free of charge on Thursday and Friday from 12 noon to 5 pm after registration
