Heritage Day and sustainability; discover the clean city…

In the weekend of September 10 and 11 you can visit many monuments; on the 36th edition of the Open Monument Day. Monuments are open to the public throughout the country, including Amsterdam of course, with extra attention this year for all kinds of aspects of sustainability.

Amsterdam wants to become a green leader in the Netherlands and Europe. A sustainability challenge that also applies to the monuments in the city. Monuments seem durable because of their age, but in use they often are not. ‘Green’ adjustments are necessary. There is still much to be gained, but in such a way that these buildings do not lose their cultural-historical value.

The monuments that open their doors for free show how you can look at sustainability in different ways. Think of: reuse of materials and repurposing, insulation, water management, increasing comfort and heating monuments. During the weekend there are not only monuments to visit, but there is also an original program with lectures, tours by junior guides and other activities.
