Every year December is a special month in the botanical garden of Amsterdam. This year, too, the Hortus will once again be transformed into a fairytale winter garden.
From Wednesday 22 December to Sunday 9 January, the ‘Winter Hortus’ is open every day until 5 p.m. (with the exception of public holidays). Enjoy a winter walk through the decorated garden and warm up with a cup of hot chocolate or mulled wine. Children can listen to exciting winter fairy tales around the campfire. Adults can learn about fungi and other underground things during various workshops, tours and other activities.
There are plenty of activities for young visitors this winter. They can learn more about plants in the winter season with the free scavenger hunt. Or listen to one of the exciting campfire stories: ‘The Queen of the Snakes’ or ‘King Frost’ read by Abe the Narrator.
Campfire, lights and more
The Hortus creates a cozy atmosphere with campfires, winter decorations and glittering lights in the garden. You can warm up after the walk with a snack or drink that you can pick up at the Oranjerie. The menu includes mulled wine, hot chocolate and various sweet and savory delicacies from the kitchen of the Oranjerie.
