Exhibition of the work of ABN AMRO Art Prize winner Evelyn Taocheng Wang

Evelyn Taocheng Wang is the ninth winner of the ABN AMRO Art Prize. The prize includes a private exhibition in the Hermitage, which opened this month under the title: The petal, which had fallen during the crack of dawn, I picked up in the evening twilight.

The title – deliberately misspelled – is a quote translated by Wang from the famous Chinese writer Lu Xun (1881–1936) about his childhood home; a source of memories for him. With the exhibition, Wang illustrates how language and architecture are intertwined with identity.

Wang was granted Dutch nationality in 2019. Her ‘new’ identity and Dutch culture are therefore important themes in the exhibition. Wang made eight new paintings and a series of drawings and paintings on rice paper as part of the ABN AMRO Art Prize, including one more than seven meters long. Central theme is the customs and practices in Dutch culture, symbolized by Wang, among other things, by ‘oliebollen’. Attention is also paid to the conflict in adopting a new identity as an immigrant.
