Exhibition about Cycades in the Hortus

00:00:00event

With this exhibition, the Hortus goes back in time, very far back, to the world of the Cycladees, survivors of prehistoric times.

Cycads – or cycads, as they are also called, although they are neither palm nor fern – are among the most primitive seed plants. And they have been around for over 270 million years! It is difficult to imagine, but these ancient plants witnessed the rise and extinction of the dinosaurs.

They reached the peak of their diversity during the Mesozoic (252-66 million years ago) and especially in the Jurassic and Cretaceous geological periods. Together with ferns and ginkgos, they formed extensive ecosystems and provided food for herbivorous dinosaurs.

In the exhibition you will discover how these ancient plants have existed for so long and how they have survived several mass extinctions. And our current modern age also offers challenges for the Cycadee. Unfortunately, today only a handful of species remain, which are also seriously endangered. The Hortus contributes to the conservation of and knowledge about this wonderful group of plants.

This exhibition also includes the ancient plant treasure hunt – fun for children (and parents)! You can get this treasure hunt for free at the entrance.
