Art historian Christiane Hoefert talks with exhibiting artist Bob van Brunschot (Waalwijk, 1965). Van Brunschot is a self-taught artist. As a reference for his paintings, he uses photographs by well-known photographers such as Brassai, Diane Arbus and Martin Parr. He is also inspired by naive painters such as Henri ‘le dounier’ Rousseau.
The frames of his paintings are often homemade or composed of found materials, Van Brunschot also makes sculptures. His main motivation for making art is ‘to contribute to more awareness and insight into all kinds of “wrongs” that people do to nature and each other for various reasons (religion/power/prejudice/fear and ignorance/opportunism …….)’ .
