After reading the book Amsterdam in 10,000 Steps – and gifting it a few times – we were curious to meet the authors behind this beautiful guide. In conversation with Roos Hamelink, who co-wrote it with Hannah Bakx, we discovered just how much research, love for the city and attention to detail is behind these walks.
Created for Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary, the book features historical walking routes of around 10,000 steps through different neighbourhoods of the city. Of course, the Plantage is one of them.
The Plantage walk starts at the Blauwbrug and ends at Brouwerij ’t IJ, and truly makes you see the area differently. You don’t just pass well-known (and lesser-known) spots, but uncover the stories behind them. From the Hortus and ARTIS to Waterlooplein, the Portuguese Synagogue and the Oosterdok, the neighbourhood’s history unfolds through small, surprising stories about residents, buildings and remarkable events. That’s exactly what makes this route different from a typical city walk.
A lovely way to explore your own neighbourhood – or to introduce someone else to everything the Plantage has to offer. As Roos put it: “it’s a historically responsible way to get your steps in!”
