The Muiderkerk

Who are you and what do you do?
The Muiderkerk, at the beginning of Linnaeusstraat, is home to two communities: the Muiderkerk congregation and the Citykerk Community. Both are part of the Protestant Church of Amsterdam. An Ethiopian faith community based in Amsterdam also worships here.

The Muiderkerk congregation takes a more traditional approach, while Citykerk focuses more on innovation. Our shared values are progressive, independent-minded and therefore distinctly Amsterdam.

What makes your work special or unique?
We don’t sell products or services. We offer food for the soul. We inspire, encourage and listen. We bring another perspective: what are we here on earth for? We translate the big ideas of faith, hope and love into small, manageable portions — enough for everyone, every day.

Why are you a member of the De Plantage neighbourhood network?
People used to go to church. A contemporary church also goes out to meet people. That’s why we enjoy working with religious, cultural and commercial organisations.

What kinds of collaboration with other organisations are you open to?
We offer traditional and contemporary programmes exploring faith and meaning. We know how to bring questions that touch the soul into businesses and organisations through workshops and inspirational sessions. We’re also available to listen and think things through together.

What would you like to contribute to the neighbourhood?
We know how to bring people from very different backgrounds together. We encourage people to see the humanity in everyone. We pray for peace in our neighbourhood and city. We help those who have no one else to turn to.

What’s something local residents might enjoy knowing about you?
While we hold our Sunday service at 10.30 am, there’s a boxing gym operating beneath our feet in the basement. So you can take your pick 😊.
