It’s good to anticipate policy. And in 2027, new rules will take effect regarding disposable cups and containers on the street, in offices, and in restaurants. Good to know!
From 2027 onwards, the following rules will apply in short:
- For offices, businesses, and other organizations: reusable cups will be the standard from now on. No more exceptions.
- Places where you eat or drink on-site but reusable cups are more difficult: events, restaurants, cafes, day attractions, (sports) clubs. Reusable cups will remain the standard unless the cups and containers are collected and recycled.
- Consumption on the go: businesses must offer reusable cups to those who want them, but disposable cups will remain permitted. In April, it was announced that the mandatory surcharge for disposable cups and containers will be abolished.
So, do you still have disposable cups next to the coffee machine, or do you sell your sandwiches wrapped in plastic? Then now is the time to change that!
The new rules will formally take effect in 2027. In the meantime, enforcement is being adjusted, allowing the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate to adapt to the new situation. Businesses affected by the change will have a year to prepare before enforcement is implemented.
