The balance between liveliness and quality of life is not balanced everywhere in Amsterdam. The municipality is working on new measures.
Amsterdam is working on new measures to combat the growth in the number of visitors and limit the nuisance of mass tourism. The construction of new hotels had already been stopped and it has now been decided that additional beds will no longer be allowed.
There are currently several hotels that are increasing their number of sleeping places during renovation, conversion, expansion or within existing rooms. This is immediately prohibited.
The municipality is also working on measures to improve the quality of life in the city center and to better distribute coffee shops.
In recent years, more than 75 measures have been taken to combat the negative effects of mass tourism. Examples of this are: the hotel stop, measures to regulate the number of sleeping places in B&Bs and holiday rentals, moving and reducing sea and river cruises, the coach ban in the city center, the introduction of an alcohol ban and smoking ban in the Red Light District, closing earlier of the catering industry in the Red Light District and various behavioral campaigns.
The measures have a positive effect on the quality of life. For example, there is more peace on the streets late at night. But more is needed to regulate the growing number of visitors and further reduce nuisance.
