Located in the heart of De Plantage, Nivon Natuurvrienden has its national headquarters here in the neighbourhood. Founded in 1924, Nivon has been bringing people together and connecting them with nature for more than a century. With over 35,000 members, it is one of the largest volunteer-based organisations in the Netherlands dedicated to nature, culture and leisure activities.
Who are you and what do you do?
Nivon organises walks, trips, courses and cultural activities, and manages nature hostels, campsites and walking routes throughout the Netherlands. Everything revolves around learning, exploring and enjoying nature together in an accessible and affordable way.
What makes your work special or unique?
What makes Nivon unique is that its nature hostels and campsites are largely managed and maintained by volunteers. The commitment and involvement of members have been the foundation of the organisation for more than one hundred years.
Why did you join the De Plantage Neighbourhood Network?
Nivon joined the network because of the opportunity to participate in the collective energy purchasing programme. This fits well with our commitment to sustainability and the responsible use of energy and resources. We also value being part of a network of engaged organisations and entrepreneurs in the neighbourhood.
What would you like to contribute to the neighbourhood?
Volunteers are at the heart of Nivon. Across the Netherlands, thousands of people volunteer their time to maintain walking routes, run nature hostels, organise activities, lead trips and support events. From our office in De Plantage, we work towards a society that is green, social and accessible.
We are always looking for new volunteers. Whether you enjoy organising activities, welcoming guests, maintaining walking routes or contributing in another way, there are many opportunities to get involved. Through this, we hope to build stronger connections with local residents who share an interest in nature, culture and community.

Many people are unfamiliar with Nivon, despite the organisation having existed for more than a century and counting over 35,000 members. Nivon manages nature hostels, campsites and walking routes in beautiful locations throughout the Netherlands and organises activities for people of all ages throughout the year.
