Cheerful Opening of The "new" Hortus Tunnel

Published on Monday, November 3News

After a long period of preparation, the renovated Hortus Tunnel was finally “opened” – with bubbles, warm drinks, and themed pastries. And of course, some beautiful words and ribbon-cutting by district executive Nienke van Renssen and Carlien Blok, director of the Hortus.

It was a wonderful Friday afternoon on October 31!

The Hortus Tunnel — that’s the local name for the exit of Waterlooplein metro station, located beneath the Names Monument. It’s a gateway to the Plantage neighborhood and the starting point for visits to the many beautiful places and institutions just around the corner.

Love for the Plantage neighborhood

Display cases with outdated posters, graffiti, and damaged glass — not exactly the warm welcome we want to offer everyone entering our area. The city agreed, and with their support and the efforts of Team De Plantage, the Amsterdam design agency Merktuig created a fresh new look that celebrates our love for the Plantage neighborhood.

Wander and discover

The new map on the walls makes it easier than ever to find your way around the enieghborhood. If you scan the QR code you’ll also discover walking routes through the neighborhood – surprising paths that lead you to places you might not yet know.

We’ll do our best to keep the Hortus Tunnel clean and welcoming, so that everyone entering Amsterdam’s Oasis through this passage feels at home.

💙 We love our Plantage neighborhood!
