7 films by director Paul Leduc, January 26 to February 23, 2025
Paul Leduc was a hidden gem for Kriterion for a long time. Although his films were once difficult to find due to the limited number of copies, his work is now experiencing a revival in Europe thanks to the retrospective of the DocLisboa Film Festival and the Cinemateca Portuguesa. When one of our Kriterion colleagues discovered his film Dollar Mambo (1993) during DocLisboa, our enthusiasm was sparked. He encouraged us to see the film, and he was right – this was something completely different than anything we had ever experienced before. Leduc’s experimental style made a deep impression on us and we are convinced that it will affect you as well.
At Kriterion we now have the opportunity to share his work with a wider audience. This retrospective, consisting of seven of his films, each shown twice, offers a unique opportunity to discover Leduc’s versatile oeuvre. Through documentaries and experimental musicals, these films examine topics such as cultural destruction, indigenous resilience and anti-imperialist struggles.
