The Dutch Resistance Museum is launching the travelling exhibition Fri, Libertat, Merdeka – Indonesia, Suriname, Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao from WWII to the present day.

The exhibition shares the stories of people in these regions during and immediately after the Second World War. What impact did the war have on the economy, society and everyday life? And how did this period encourage the former Dutch colonies’ pursuit of independence?

Fri, libertat and merdeka all mean ‘freedom’ in Sranan Tongo, Papiamento and Bahasa Indonesia respectively. In addition to wartime history, the exhibition explores migration to the Netherlands, building a new life and the search for a sense of home.

The exhibition will travel to various cities and communities throughout the Netherlands over the coming years. Its first location is OBA Reigersbos in Amsterdam Zuidoost.
