New Exhibition at the Portuguese Synagogue: Snogeiros – People of the Snoge

00:00:00event

Behind the monumental walls of the Portuguese Synagogue – affectionately known as the Snoge – is not a static past, but a living community that gathers to pray, celebrate, learn, mourn and support one another. As part of the synagogue’s 350th anniversary celebrations, visitors are invited to discover the people who make up this community today.

Photographer Marte Visser was granted exceptional access to the daily life of the Portuguese-Israelite Community. Through her distinctive eye for light, ritual and human connection, she captures the faces, stories and traditions that continue to shape the community.

The exhibition also highlights a special connection between past and present. Rembrandt van Rijn lived in this neighbourhood, portrayed members of the community and maintained friendships within it. Now, Marte Visser documents life within that same community, once again using light and human stories to bring people together.
