Like every year on February 25, this year there will also be a commemoration at the Dokwerker on the Jonas Daniël Meijerplein in De Plantage.
Then the February strike of 1941 is commemorated. The February Strike Commemoration Committee organizes this together with the municipal council.
Program
- Chairman Jaïr Stranders opens the commemoration.
- This year’s speaker is journalist, columnist and writer Sheila Sitalsing.
- Writer and theater maker Marjolijn van Heemstra recites a poem that she wrote especially for the commemoration
- There is a musical contribution
The committee requests everyone – because of sustainability – to order or bring a small flower arrangement, a single flower or a small-scale alternative. These can be delivered on the day itself at the Jonas Daniël Meijerplein (by yourself or by the florist).
Why do we commemorate?
The February strike of 1941 made a great impression nationally and internationally. It was the only broad civil protest in occupied Europe against the anti-Jewish measures of the Nazis. As a token of recognition and appreciation, Queen Wilhelmina granted the municipality of Amsterdam the motto “Heroic, determined, merciful” in 1946, which has since been added to the city coat of arms. The commemoration of the February strike is aimed at connecting the present with the past, focusing on vigilance and against any form of discrimination.
