This autumn, The National Maritime Museum presents a captivating fashion exhibition: Oceanista – Fashion & Sea. From 10 October, discover how maritime heritage, contemporary fashion, and the sustainable future of clothing are deeply intertwined.
What do the yellow raincoat, the Breton stripe, and the fisherman’s sweater have in common? They all originated in maritime culture and have inspired designers worldwide for decades.
✨ Top designers
Oceanista showcases maritime-inspired creations by international icons such as Chanel, Maison Margiela, Versace, Jean Paul Gaultier, Thom Browne, Balmain, Off-White/Virgil Abloh, and Moncler. Dutch designers including Iris van Herpen, Duran Lantink, Botter, Martan, Camiel Fortgens, Darwin Winklaar (Niño Divino), and Yousra Razine Mahrah present bold and sustainable designs.
✨ Oceanista Atelier
A unique feature of the exhibition is the Oceanista Atelier, developed in collaboration with students from ROC Amsterdam. The focus here is on slow fashion: timeless and repairable clothing with a minimal ecological footprint. Students present their own work, give tutorials in traditional craft techniques, and invite visitors to sketch their own sustainable designs.
Oceanista – Fashion & Sea is based on a traveling concept from the M/S Maritime Museum in Helsingør (Denmark), offered through the Expona exhibition network. For the Dutch edition, The National Maritime Museum has enriched the concept with pieces from its own collection and works by national designers.
